The target has to understand the message in both written and spoken form keeping various aspects in mind. Problem-solving and conflict management become easierĪlso referred to as the “ one-way communication”, in this mode, the information conveyed by the sender is interpreted by the receiver in its original form.Decision-making becomes more effective and less time-consuming.Builds cordial relations and soft skills.Helps in devising plans and strategies for reaching a goal.Maintains the flow of conveying information. Thus, there are five modes of communication:īefore we delve deep into the topic, let us first understand the importance of different modes of communication. Existential Physics is an introduction and exploration of some of the most profound questions that physics has attempted to answer, and a discussion of whether these explanations are plausible or even count as physics. It is undeniable that modern physics has become extremely weird, with attempts to explain things like quantum physics, general relativity and the standard model of particle physics leading to even weirder hypotheses. They settled on reading Hossenfelder’s Existential Physics as their next book, and since they didn’t have a physicist in the group, Mark asked if I was interested in joining them? I was, because the book club sounded fun, and I’m also Twitter friends with Sabine and was quite confident that the book would be an interesting read! So in discussing the book, I can not only talk about my reactions as a physicist, but also the reactions of colleagues in theater, linguistics, software and information systems. My friend Mark at my university that I’ve known since I became a professor some 15 years ago has been running a book club with colleagues from a number of departments. I read this book recently due to somewhat curious circumstances. I don’t want to – but I think until this is resolved, I need to. *sigh* How silly we are at times, right?Īnyway, because of the strain I’m putting on my eyes right now (current glasses don’t work and cannot get new ones because they wouldn’t work either)… I’m probably going to slow down just a bit on my reviews. It’s just something that happened to my grandmother – not me. For someone who loves to read as much as I do – aside from having several bookish blogs that need daily attention… this kinda hit me hard emotionally. Funny, I always thought I’d be able to see one of those suckers on my eyes – but apparently not always. Instead, next week I’ll begin to find out how bad and what can be done with a cataract on my left eye. Seems that the blurry and fuzzy words on my monitor and Kindle cannot be fixed with a new glasses prescription. On a completely personal note, I got some disturbing news recently. While I may not have accomplished all of my goals – I’ve made a darned good start, and I’m content with that. Here at Keeper Bookshelf I’m ending the year with a good feeling. How did yet another year get away from us? Poisoned candy rumors originated in the 1960s, followed later by stories about sick people putting sharp objects into apples at Halloween. An example of a story that succeeds on all three levels is the perennial Halloween candy tampering scare. Ideas or messages that stick are those that are understandable, memorable, and have a lasting impact. Rather than sweating over an original presentation, you can follow their “stickiness” template or even emulate someone else’s idea that worked. You don’t have to be a great speaker to communicate your idea effectively-the authors show you what to do through numerous examples of messages that have succeeded and others that have bombed. Based on a wide-ranging examination of psychology research, popular culture, and news headlines, they identify six criteria for shaping your message so it resonates. Made to Stick by brothers Chip and Dan Heath explores what makes some messages “stick” in the public’s consciousness while others go unheard or unremembered and explains how to create an idea that sticks. In our overstimulated and distracted society, great ideas and important messages often fail to gain traction, while bad ideas and falsehoods, such as urban legends, go viral and seem to stick around forever. 1-Page Summary 1-Page Book Summary of Made to Stick You’ll also attend monthly meetings with your mentor. He had dreamed of a perfect, loving, wholesome family where in reality, his relationship with his son Albie is almost non-existent and, we learn in the book’s opening scene, his wife Connie thinks she wants to divorce him. However, before Connie makes her final decision and Albie goes off to university, the Petersen family gives themselves one last chance and embark on a month-long Grand Tour spanning multiple European countries. In many ways, Douglas Petersen’s life after marriage is not what he had expected. However, I am armed and ready to share my thoughts on this wonderful book today and I can’t wait! I think the fact that I still have so much enthusiasm for it even after a few weeks really says a lot about how well-written and plotted this book is. I’ve been meaning to write this review for a long time – ever since I finished reading it in November, really – but I never quite got around to doing it. I also tend to hear people say that they don’t like that she made Minthe a person with possible BPD because it gives that mental illness bad reputation. Sometimes people learn that they have something going on when friends and family refer them to professionals. Some people don’t know they have trauma or a mental illness until all of their relationships have been affected or it’s affected them in a way in which surfaces in self destructive behaviour. Remember that she is human and that everyone deals with and goes through trauma and mental illness in their own way. I see people talk about and criticise on how she (Rachel) portrays mental illnesses (BPD or anything else) and trauma (sexual abuse). (I have taken the constructive criticism from the comments and adjusted the post.) I feel like I should preface this by saying this is more speculation than definitive truth. After undergoing the surgery, the visions do stop-but she reveals the depth of her faith by continuing to seek and pursue God's will anyway. Mark Salzman's Lying Awake is a finely wrought gem that plumbs the depths of one woman's soul, and in so doing raises salient questions about the power-and price-of faith. With the help of other characters in the book, she realizes that her attitude toward her visions had been one of self-centeredness rather than true, humble pursuit of God. Sister Johns cloistered life of peace and prayer has been electrified by ever more frequent visions of Gods radiance, leading her toward a deep religious ecstasy. Through a series of flashbacks, we see the events that brought Sister John to the monastery: an absentee drunk mother, unhappiness and loneliness in life, finding peace in leaving the world behind, and experiencing a dry period in which she does not experience God. Afraid that her faith has all been an illusion, Sister John undergoes intense soul-searching as she decides what to do. She is diagnosed with a small brain tumor in her temporal lobe, easily operable, that is causing her to have localized epilepsy that is most likely the cause of her visions. Set in 1997 Los Angeles, Lying Awake tells the story of Carmelite nun Sister John of the Cross, who for the past three years has been experiencing ecstatic visions of God-accompanied by intense headaches. The people who stand before kings may look like they did it all by themselves. We do owe something to parentage and patronage. In Outliers, I want to convince you that these kinds of personal explanations of success don’t work. And in examining the lives of the remarkable among us-the skilled, the talented, and the driven-I will argue that there is something profoundly wrong with the way we make sense of things. We’re going to uncover the secrets of a remarkable lawyer, look at what separates the very best pilots from pilots who have crashed planes, and try to figure out why Asians are so good at math. Over the course of the chapters ahead, I’m going to introduce you to one kind of outlier after another: to geniuses, business tycoons, rock stars, and software programmers. “This is a book about outliers, about men and women who do things that are out of the ordinary. |
